Client Story

Client:
  The Ottawa Mission
Project:
  Hostels to Homes

Date:  March 15, 2010

What was this project all about?

Hostels to Homes was a pilot project that ran in 10 cities across Ontario, including Ottawa, where it was being managed by The Ottawa Mission.  It was designed to help clients of the Mission who were leaving their residency programs there and were trying to re-establish themselves living independently in the community at large in a healthy and sustainable way.  This is often a very difficult transition and Hostels to Homes provided support to its clients for 18 months.

February 2010 marked the end of the second 18-month phase of the program.

How was Sanitas Playback Theatre involved?

The Ottawa Mission wanted to provide an evening of celebration and reflection for the clients, staff and funders of the Hostels to Homes program.  We served by providing a performance for this gathering of people, entitled Stories of Hostels Homes.

Our aim was to reveal how the program impacted the people who were involved in a way that statistical and paper-based reporting can't:  to hear, honour and celebrate their stories ~ to uncover the human impact of the program.

Our aim was also to further deepen the existing, strong bonds amongst the people of this community and offer further evidence in support of the need to continue funding the Hostels to Homes program.

What did our client have to say?

"Excellent!  Very engaging!  It reminded us all of how impactful the program has been and why it needs to continue.  Thank you, Brie!  Much appreciated!"

How did the audience enjoy the show?

Here's what some people had to say:

~  "Excellent!  It made me think about what I have been through and how far I have come.  This [performance] was something different.  I didn't know what to expect.  It was very enjoyable."  Anon.

~  “Fantastic!  Eye opening!  It brought out the "truth" of the program.  Shannon B.

~  “I really did enjoy it!!  It showed I was not the only one that was helped.  Mike C.

~  “I found it was a better way to show what the program represents to the community in general; a less paper approach to give hope to long life to the program."  Hamlet
